Stage 1 students had a great day out in Kiama exploring rock pools and the coast line. Students participated in a variety of hands on activities on the day. These included: using binoculars to spot the whales swimming out at sea, using bug eye viewing lenses (to see what is like to have vision like an insect), using periscopes to view underwater, making sea sculptures out of air drying clay, finding shells and treasure (sea glass), exploring rock pools, holding sea snails and sea urchins, touching a shark (this was a highlight) and walking around to the blow hole. Please see below for a selection of photos from the day.
To celebrate the efforts of students at PKPS, we held a good behaviour beach day. Students who had displayed a high standard of expected behaviour during Term 1 were treated to games and fun at the beach. Congratulations on you outstanding behaviour.
Today we celebrated Easter at Port Kembla! Students participated in rotational activities and finished with our annual Easter parade. All students made a special Easter hat, decorated cookies and played Easter games. We played egg and spoon races, bunny hop relays, don't drop the egg (the same concept as hot potato) and some even played stuck in the chocolate (same concept as stuck in the mud). It was a fun day and students were all very well behaved. The Easter parade involved, laughter, fun, dancing, singing and of course plenty of great hats and outfits. Thank you to all the parents and visitors who came along and cheered the students on as they walked by, it was great to see so much support. Thank you to Mrs Dunning for organising a fun day of celebrations for our students.
The sun was shining and the grounds were almost perfect for our annual cross country race this week. After weeks of relentless rain, we were able to finally get out and run the race. The students all ran exceptionally well considering we have not had a lot or practice, due to the rain and wet track. A special thank you to Miss Bollard for her huge effort in organising the day and coming to school very early to set up. Well done to all students for having a go and giving it their best. Congratulations to everyone who has made it through to district.
Room 5 & 6 are completing the Science unit 'All Mixed Up' this term. We are learning about mixtures used in everyday life and how different materials mix differently. We have learnt that there are so many types of mixtures and there are things that we use everyday, for example hand soap, shampoo and bread. Today we looked at what happens when we mix rice bubbles, cocoa and icing sugar. Students worked in groups to investigate and report their findings. We then discovered that these ingredients (plus a couple more) are what you use to make chocolate crackles! Luckily we had some pre made crackles to taste at the end of the lesson. Next week we will try a different mixing experiment... it is going to be sticky.
Welcome back to school for 2017. Meet the new, eager faces of Room 5! Their very first day of Year 2.
